Overview
Your City Sightseeing tour of New Orleans has been designed to show you the very best of this amazing city. You’ll get to see all that makes this such a unique place. Before the United States bought Louisiana from the French, New Orleans spent 50 years as a Spanish-rule city and before that it was French. This mixed heritage still shows today and helps make it the incredible place it is.
The perfect place to hop on the bus is Jackson Square, a historic park in the city’s famous French Quarter. It’s a stone’s throw from the Mississippi River. If you’ll lucky, you’ll see a riverboat passing by. And make sure you try a delicious beignet at Café du Monde near the corner of the square. They’ve been serving them for more than one hundred years!
Canal Street is another great hop-off destination. Here you can watch the city’s famous streetcars go by. You can even ride one, but the views are definitely better from the top deck of the bus! While there, take a stroll down Bourbon Street, which is where they say jazz was born. Another of New Orleans historic streets is Basin Street, which features in Louis Armstrong’s famous “Basin Street Blues”.
A little further from the centre lies the Garden District, which is where the city’s wealthy used to build their homes. Today, it features some of the city’s most emblematic buildings, impressive mansions built in the plantation style of the 19th century. And last, but not least, hop off on St. Charles Avenue, home to the famous St. Charles Streetcar Line. From there, it’s a short walk to the Lafayette Cemetery, where you can enjoy your free included self-guided walking tour of this spookily beautiful cemetery.
And while you’re in the city, make sure you keep your ears peeled for the music and that you try some of the delicious Cajun food. They’re part of what makes New Orleans such a special place.
